8/28/2004 10:49:33 AM|||Sarah|||So, I was at a "Welcome to the New School Year" meeting at the institution of higher learning that currently employs me. The president was very excited to announce that all of us are receiving a 3% salary increase. That statement was met with rousing claps of approval. I kept my hands in my lap, however. Why should everybody get a raise? The president himself said that this is not for COLA (cost of living adjustment), but because we were all doing a wonderful job and we deserve it. I know that not everyone in that room is doing a wonderful job. I have, naturally, but that's besides the point. This is just another instance of merit not being rewarded in the public sector.
