There is now more evidence that this won't be the case. As explained in The Tennessean today, professors must make sure that they clearly explain grading policies (you don't expect students to read the syllabus, do you?), attendance must be taken (very juvenile), tutoring must become more accessible, and students with low grades halfway through the semester will be contacted. This is a campus of around 20,000 undergraduates! Why should the administration have to call Bobby in his dorm on a Wednesday night to find out why he's failing Biology? The estimate is that 50% of the freshmen won't earn the 2.75 GPA needed to keep the scholarship. Good! Let's give that money to students who actually value it and choose to study every once in a while instead of doing keg stands on a regular basis. Don't get me wrong ... beer and college life are a great combination. But, balance is the key!
