The Lieutenant Governor of my home state, Maryland, gave a wonderful speech last night. Michael Steele had me standing and cheering by the end. Only others watching C-Span and those on the convention floor got to hear his words. The great pontificators on the cable news stations were still sharing their thoughts and waiting for the "big" names.

After all of the night's festivities were over, Nathan and I flipped around (well, not literally ... actually, we just pushed buttons on our remote ... well, not "we", because I wouldn't let him touch the remote) to find out what the different stations were saying. I found Chris Matthews interviewing Lieutenant Governor Steele. It was as condescending as you would expect when you watch a liberal reporter talk to a black man.

Mr. Matthews asked Lieutenant Governor Steele if he had seen Barack Obama speech. Steele answered, "Yes, and I thought it was a great, well-crafted Republican speech (which Steele also slyly noted during his time on the podium). But I'm not here to talk about Barack Obama. I'm here to talk about my speech." Matthews replied, "But you are talking about Barack Obama!" Hmmm, Chris .... maybe that's because he was politely answering your question!!

Beyond that silly assertion, the fact that Chris Matthews asked Steele about Obama is similar to a statement such as: "Hey, you're gay? I know a gay guy named Steve who lives in Dallas. You know him?"

Matthews ended by telling Steele that he was a good guy and he hopes "he makes it some day"! I can understand if this was meant facetiously, but it clearly wasn't. Therefore, wow! First of all, Lieutenant Governor Steele is the first black man to reach state-wide office. I think he's already made it. And, Chris, maybe you need to examine the cable ratings and figure out how to improve your own sagging career before instructing others to do the same.
