CNN does a cursory take on blogs and what they meant to the 2004 election.

I'd have to say that so far, blogs have largely benefited Bush. There are certainly is a healthy number of liberal bloggers (moreso than leftist radio talk show hosts), but the big stories uncovered by bloggers this election year did more to assist the Bush campaign. The biggest was Rathergate, which was a blog discovery. Then there was the removal of a political landmine set to explode two days before the election - the supposed "lost" high explosives south of Baghdad.

Both stories turned out to be more on the side of fantasy than truth. The latter was contradicted by numerous sources, and ran its course well ahead of the final days before the election. The former showed the haphazard approach to truth in the CBS News division, and shortcircuited an absolute fraud in an attempt to damage the President of the United States.

That CNN article discusses journalistic ethics. It discusses the inability now for news outlets to "sit" on a story.

I like things better now.
