Saturday I helped out a local state house candidate, who I believe will be the surprise of the night tomorrow in Tennessee, breaking the Democratic stranglehold on Davidson County and a local "dynasty" in one fell swoop. Yesterday, for fun (because Tennessee is safe), 6 groups of us went to the Coliseum and handed out Bush / Cheney stickers, which was an enlightening experience.
Two out of three people that came by us either asked for or already had a sticker, so I didn't get a chance to observe too terribly many Kerry supporters in what would be their natural habitat. My anecdotal theory about sports fans, and football fans in particular, that they are more conservative as a rule, held true.
Republicans, as a rule, are just happier, more sociable, people. Some folks who did not want a Bush sticker simply said "No thank you." That's fine - that's the way civilized people act. Many were stern, saying "No!" and walking quickly straight ahead, careful to avoid eye contact. They seemed afraid of even mild confrontation. There were a couple "Hell no!"'s, and one "Not on your life!", but the best was what appeared to be a thirty year old woman who buzzed me with spittle, sticking out her tongue as she walked by me. I thought it summed up Kerry's arguments nicely.
Oh yes, then there was the environmentally conscious Kerry supporter, who tried to take stickers and tear them up in front of me.
I just laughed at him.
One more day to go. We need to make our last stand - let's find some time today and help a candidate. And if you're in one of those wavering states, make calls for Bush.|||109931426068781802|||Posting Resumes
