Glenn Reynolds links to an excellent post on the potential, and current, military might of Japan. Being removed sixty years from when they were a mortal enemy, a strong Japan is now an asset and a significant bulwark against the expansion of Chinese power in East Asia.

It's a comforting thought. If Japan had to retool its economy to defense production, the combined might of the Japanese and the United States military ought to be plenty enough to keep Chinese expansionism in check.
