Such opinions are allowed to be expressed, ironically, precisely because we do enjoy extensive freedoms. Our government has many faults, but squelching free speech is hardly one of them. No one may like what you say, but hey, that's the price to pay for freedom. There is no "freedom from ridicule" provision in the First Amendment. I don't even think the Warren court could have found a penumbra that big.
But, just in case those MoveOn people gander across this blog, I would like to offer an example of a truly restrictive, freedom fearing government. Try Uzbekistan, a country where there are no elections and the right to assemble is met with live gun fire. This is just the most recent example. History is replete with them. The last half-century has seen more oppression on a wider scale than almost any period in history. Unfortunately, those who live in a small world either will not, or for a lack of knowledge, cannot, see the world as it truly exists, and are incapable of computing that their position is the ultimate irony.
It would be too hopeful of me that reality should be setting in with the Leftist set. The myths of repression in America ought to be evaporating, once aimless students should be calling out their indoctrinating professorial corps, and the far Left's infatuation with hating America for all that makes it good should be left with no credibility. It seems that there are still a few out there who overslept and missed their appointment with the ash heap.|||111599283832697766|||Reality
