7/18/2005 10:57:00 PM|||Sarah|||I am tired of hearing about Natalee Halloway. I am sorry that a terrible thing probably happened to her, but enough already.
Nathan and I spent much of the weekend entertaining relatives from Pittsburgh. When they left last night, we turned on the TV to get caught up on news. We checked three "news" stations, and all of them were reporting from Aruba about the missing girl from Alabama. Fox News eventually moved on, but only so that we could get an update on some groom who disappeared in a lake (or some other body of water ... I was too annoyed to pay much attention). Again this evening, Hannity and Colmes spent twenty-five minutes talking to Natalee's mom and then updated us on the critical headlines concerning a Florida middle school teacher who had sex with one of her students.
There are some important things in the world right now. The leaders of Iraq and Iran just met. Russia and China are getting cozy. Democrats are hanging themselves on the rope of false accusations. Let's see ... what else has happened? Oh, yeah. London got BOMBED BY TERRORISTS. But, I understand how these stories can't compare to the discovery of a few blond hairs on a piece of duct tape.
I don't mean to seem callous. I hope that Natalee Halloway is found alive and well. However, her case is getting attention because she is a pretty blond girl who ran into trouble in an exotic, romantic location. There are kids who get lost every day, kids who are abused by horrible parents every day and kids who are tossed around inadequate foster systems every day. To me, Natalee's situation is no more tragic than all of these sad stories that go unnoticed.|||112174629839743470|||Where's the News?
