Nathan Moore's Thoughts
Looters
Sarah just commented, but I can’t let this one lie. Looters are evil embodied.
Looters are the lowest of the low – martial law has been declared. I advocate shooting all looters on sight. Whoever, whenever, and whatever they are looting. It doesn’t seem to matter as long as its free. From Nola
“People are leaving the Superdome to go to Canal Street to loot,†said New Orleans City Council President Oliver Thomas. “Some people broke into drug stores and stole the drugs off the shelves. It is looting times five. I’m telling you, it’s like Sodom and Gomorrah.
Well, we know what happened to the Sodomites.
This is great. The people of New Orleans, and the United States, make way so you can stay in the Superdome, the largest concrete structure in the city, so that you can survive one of the deadliest hurricanes in history.
The weather clears up.
And then you go steal from people who were victimized the same as you.
You deserve to be shot.
Period.

I find this passage from “1776″ extremely illuminating. The “riotous behavior” referred to is that of soldiers availing themselves of the diversions in the local tavern/red light district.
“Washington condemned all such ‘riotous behavior’. Were it to happen again the perpetrators would be subject to the severest punishment. If they resisted arrest, they would be ‘treated as a common enemy,’ meaning they would be shot dead on the spot. p.125
Note that they were only to be shot if they resisted arrest. Also remeber these looters were under a mandatory evacuation order. If they had complied, they would have ample food and water at a shelter. Provided I might add by those evil “religous right” Baptists, recently vilified for asking for Supreme Court Justices who would apply the Constitution as written instead of legislating from the bench.

Gave them the Superdome? You have no idea what you are talking about. Read this–http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/31/AR2005083102801_2.html–and get a clue.

Mike,
I’m not sure what the point of contention is with your comment. I believe it’s that a) the people in the Superdome had a right to it, b)you believe the Superdome situation a disaster, or c) that only the innocent were in it.
Most contrary to your assertion I blog with great ignorance, the truth of the matter is that people in the Superdome were not entitled to the Superdome. In fact, I recall seeing many National Guardsmen coordinating the use of the stadium as a shelter.
Obviously I wasn’t talking about the women and children in the dome. Do you think those were all that was in there? Did you miss the report that people were leaving the dome about the time the looting began…and regardless of the situation three days later, the Superdome did allow a lot of people to survice the initial impact who would have died otherwise.
Please follow the situation more closely before commenting in the future.
Regards,
NSM
