“Dwight Lewis” “is a great journalist”. “You can” “quote me” “on that”.

I like to peruse the fine journalistic stylings of Dwight Lewis from The Tennessean every now and again. Not because he offers any insightful analysis, but because that man can use quotation marks better than anyone else in the business. My review of his column from last Sunday held to the high standard of regurgitating what other people say that I have come to expect from Mr. Lewis.

There are 25 paragraphs in the column that Mr. Lewis writes about Rep. Stacy Campfield’s request to join the Legislative Black Caucus. Of these paragraphs, 15 of them are entirely quotes from Campfield or quotes of questions asked by colleagues of Mr. Lewis. The paragraphs of original thinking by Mr. Lewis were comprised wholly of such in-depth journalistic composition such as:

Really?

Another colleague interjected:

and

So, where do you go from here, Rep. Campfield?

Continue to forge ahead, Mr. Lewis, and I’ll be hoping that your Shift key never sticks so that you are not stuck with the horror of only having apostrophes at your disposal.
