My Own Victory/Concession Songs
Since Cynthia “Slappy” (or is it “Punchy”) McKinney decided to sing along with Pink’s “Dear Mr. President” as part of her concession speech, I decided that I should determine the songs with which I would sing if I should ever run for office again.
If I win, sure I could go with the expected “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang or maybe even steal McKinney’s idea and sing “Get This Party Started” by Pink. (When I think relevant political statements, Pink is always the first person who comes to mind) But, I would instead choose to be both unexpected and original. My song of victory would be “Method of Modern Love” by Hall and Oates. It would keep people guessing, and I like songs that spell out words.
If I lose, I would refuse to take a somber tone. I would belt out a song that would speak to my intent for continued public service and civil protest. I think I would sing “Please Don’t Go Girl” by New Kids on the Block because I would want to speak as the voice for my supporters. As the lyrics state, “Please don’t go, girl. It would ruin my whole world. Tell me you’ll stay. Never, ever go away.” My heartfelt rendition of this timeless tune would let those who voted for me know that I feel their pain and that I will never cease in my fight for political justice!
Side Note: There is one point in “Please Don’t Go, Girl” that Joe McIntyre (my favorite Kid) spoke the words, “Love you, girl.” I used my double tape deck to tape these three words 50 times in a row and then listened to that tape over and over again. It was if Joe was speaking just to me. Middle school was a disturbing and scary time.

If I won, I don’t know what I’d play, but if I lost, I’d bust out some Hee-Haw:
Gloom, despair, and agony on me,
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery (Aaaaw),
If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all (Ooooh),
Gloom, despair, and agony on me,

No Woman No Cry – Bob Marley
Good friends we have, oh, good friends we have lost
Along the way, yeah!
In this great future, you can’t forget your past;
So dry your tears, I seh. Yeah!
No, woman, no cry;
No, woman, no cry. Eh, yeah!
A little darlin’, don’t shed no tears:
No, woman, no cry. Eh!

Because I love me some Stones and Beatles and i’m probably the oldest person round these parts..it’s either the Beatles “I’m a Loser” or more likely..
Gimme shelter
Oh, a storm is threat’ning
My very life today
If I don’t get some shelter
Oh yeah, I’m gonna fade away
War, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
War, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
Ooh, see the fire is sweepin’
Our very street today
Burns like a red coal carpet
Mad bull lost its way

As an aside, I will say I listened to this song something like 60 times in a row to try to ‘get’ the lyrics. Didn’t have this new-fangled internet back then (c;

I always thought Mick was merely singing, “Whoaaa, Children…” Did not know that.
