Thank You Barack Obama for 75 Minutes of Outsider Mettle

I want to take this small amount of bandwidth and offer my thanks to Barack Obama on his decision to enlist Joe Biden as his vice presidential running mate.

The narcissistic Senator Biden, known for proclamations of his high IQ and freelance minstrel work while in college, is now set to accompany the “clean” and “articulate” Barack Obama as he tours the country, making the case for his worthiness of the Oval Office.

Joe Biden is also known as an agent of change, having witnessed no less than seven presidential administrations over this three decades in the United States Senate. He brings with him foreign policy gravitas, something Barack Obama sorely lacks, and further bolsters Barack Obama’s candidacy as the most liberal in our nation’s history, now including the first and third most liberal members of the upper legislative body on this one ticket.

And, now - let’s get this straight (CNN has been trying to do it all morning, aided by Obama flacks), that despite 35 years in the Senate, Joe Biden is not a Washington insider.  In fact, he takes the train home to Wilmington every weekend and doesn’t even own a home in DC!

Folks, that is a whopping 75 minute train ride, which is not an unusual commute for anyone who works in Washington, DC, senator or not - in fact, for many, that would be envious.

Please. Of course a Delaware senator does not own a home in the District.  The media is all over itself this morning (mainly on CNN and MSNBC), working preemptive strike detail praising the wisdom and benefits of this pick.  I personally did not think Obama would pick Biden - there are too many downsides: he is not a Southerner, Biden is a dedicated alpha male who would naturally be resistant to sitting second to Obama, Biden’s past comments on Obama’s experience, which work squarely into the McCain playbook, his dilution and outright sabotage of Obama’s “change message”, and his gift for gaffe, just to name a few.

The only thing he truly brings to the ticket, due to his chairmanship of the foreign relations committee and decades in the Senate, is foreign policy experience. Surely there were better options. But then, I’m for the other guy, so this sits just fine with me.
