Nathan Moore's Thoughts
What is English First Afraid Of?
The English Only advocacy group English First has indicated they will not be filing their required financial disclosure by today’s deadline
Leaders with the English Only referendum movement to make English the official language of Metro government would not say if they intended to file the group’s financial disclosure statement by today’s deadline when reached by the The City Paper
this week.
In fact, according to Davidson County Election Commission employees, a representative from Nashville English First inquired about what the penalty would be if the committee missed the filing deadline.
Subtle, no? There is good reason to avoid pre-election disclosure if you advertise your support of John Tanton
Last year, Crafton acknowledged Nashville English First had been supported by the advocacy group Pro English. The group was founded by Dr. John Tanton, who is allegedly tied to hate groups according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based non-profit that tracks hate crimes nationally.
As a rule, I find the Southern Poverty Law Center to be, well … melodramatic when it comes to labeling organizations “hate groups”. This, however, is one of the cases that seems to check out. The groups Tanton has been associated with are at the very least anti-immigrant, and not just anti-illegal immigrant. Tanton’s career shows he has one concern above all others – population control, and that ending immigration to the United States is part of his plan. He has also served as chairman of the population control committee of the Sierra Club in the 1970s, and founded the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), of which ProEnglish is a part. So far, ProEnglish has acknowledged giving $20,000 to its local franchise, Nashville’s English First. FAIR has also received millions in funding from the Pioneer Fund. Even the chief editor of The Wall Street Journal, which is not exactly a bastion of liberal apology, has described the Pioneer Fund as a “white-supremacist outfit devoted to racial purity through eugenics.”
So, no disclosure? We certainly understand. It might be a good idea to submit it in Japanese – you know, so you can “make a point”.

You know when you pick up a big rock and all the bugs and beetles and centipedes and critters start crawling out?
Yeah, that’s what the financial disclosure thing is gonna look like.
