   Nathan, I really want to pick your legal brain. I am currently awaiting an Atty Gen Op regarding whether the new (higher) write-in threshhold applies to my race. I got a decision from State Election Commission applying the new standard based upon the timeline - it was passed on the 27th of June and the election wasn’t until August. My position is that I filed notice required for write-in votes to be counted on May 5, which also required me to comply with campaign finance rules as would any other candidate, therefore I was “in the process” before the rules changed.

   Assuming that the AG drags his feet, I am looking at Chancery. The question: am I in fact challenging the constitutionality of the state’s action in applying the new statute or is there a finese way of simply asking the court to declare which statute applies? Your thoughts are appreciated on this one!

   I am looking for a few sophisticated citizens to participate in a National Science Foundation research study on political ideology in America. I am a political scientist at Stony Brook University who is interested in how American citizens really think about politics. Conventional wisdom among political scientists and public opinion scholars claims that American citizens know little about politics and care even less. The paradox is that American democracy seems to work quite well despite ignorance and apathy from most citizens.

   So why am I writing here? I believe that some citizens are better informed and more engaged in politics and that it is these more sophisticated citizens who keep American democracy on track. I have been awarded a research grant from the National Science Foundation to test this claim, and in particular to study the role of ideology in sophisticated political thinking. People who read and contribute to blogs and listings like this know and care more about politics than do most citizens, and are the target of my research.

   Participation in my study is easy and some might even find it fun. Participants will spend about one hour answering questions on a computer at a public location in Johnson City on July 15-18 and Nashville July 29-Aug 1. All responses will be completely anonymous. I am happy to pay each participant $20, which they can either keep for themselves or contribute to the political cause of their choosing.     Good Day
